Welcome to my Blog

Well this is my first posting and so I thought I would keep it short and just say welcome to all of you that visit the site. The name says it all. I have decided to dedicate my blog to random thoughts and also to ideas surrounding social justice...hence Just Thoughts. Anyway,

The Red Sox play today at 4pm ET and I can't wait to watch. I'm a die-hard fan of all things New England.

The Patriots go for a record this weekend.

And I have yet to make a decision about the Presidential Election.

Either way I have to get back to work. I will soon be posting a blog about some thoughts and questions I've had in the past and of course current events.

GO SOX!!!
Take care all,
JoeBo

Well done! Welcome to the blogging world. It's a cozy, and sometimes hostile place, but it's well worth it.

I look forward to the big questions about social justice. Kind of like, oh I don't know, the salaries of all these post season heroes versus the salaries of teachers.

JoeBo,

Well, well, well, a place to put provocative questions. I love it.

So I am curious...

What does justice mean to you? Where do you see it in action? What injustices fire you up? What's one thing you could do this week to meet that injustice head on?

I am eager to hear your thoughts.

Sorry Brighid,
I wasnt sure how to reply so i'll just do it through the comments section of my blog.
Justice is this really weird unattainable "object" that we try to create but are not sure how. But to define it I would say it means to make sure that everyone is treated equally in both policy and society. Also, maintaining a system where everyone has a chance to succeed or fail and not have it be societal, stereotypical, or systemic reasons why they do so. For instance not every white person deserves to be CEO nor does every minority deserve to be impoverished because of their starting position. I guess you could say that social mobility, fair treatment, and complete respect and dignity could be seen as justice. More so that everyone gets a fair chance.
I see justice and injustice active in my school everyday. I see labeled students remain labeled and mistreated and I see "good kids" get away with things the labeled kid could never get away with. I see justice being served on the streets but feel that more needs to be done to curb the problems that exist there.
Everyday in my classes I try to remove stereotypes and lead a life dedicated to erasing ignorance from those that interact with me on a daily basis. On a more active scale I advise the Hip Hop Dance Team at school which is a truly multicultural club at a school that is "segregated" in itself.
Well thats all have time for now but I really get fired up about things like racism, perception based upon race, creed, sexual orientation, abilities, etc. I just dont like it when people think they are better than someon simply because they have something the other one doesnt or because the person doesnt fit the mold of your "normal" individual. I also hate the fact that we count on those in power to relinquish it instead of fighting to get more control for ourselves. But what can I say...I'm not tenured yet so I'm not in a position to fight it here on a large scale.

Gotta go,
JoeBo
